Go Iceland!

Go Iceland!

Whether it be Cinderella and her step-sisters, the tortoise and the hare, or David and Goliath, our culture loves a story about the little guy one-upping the big kahuna! And probably that is what made the Europe Cup so much fun to be a part of this summer. Goodness! Wales beating Belgium! Iceland whooping up on England! Who’d have thought!! And even though France was favored to win, along comes Portugal to take home the cup, in spite of the…

Raven Wild and Star Fire

Raven Wild and Star Fire

I grew up watching the few Saturday morning TV shows offered for kids. And invariably they were about a girl and her horse. Fury, My Friend Flicka, and Black Beauty were my reason for living! I begged my mother for horseback riding lessons. And so after months of nagging, she finally relented. We borrowed a pair of jeans from the neighbor boy and cowgirl boots from my cousin. I was set! That is, until I saw the horses. They freaked…

Love Those US Soccer Men!

Love Those US Soccer Men!

I am soooo proud of US Mens National Soccer team and their win over Guatemala this week. The secret of their success undoubtedly was their lineup. Klinsmann finally got it right. Congrats to the goal scorers: Clint Dempsey, Geoff Cameron, Graham Zusi, and Jozy Altidore!

German Gingerbread

German Gingerbread

My trip to Nuremberg, Germany taught me that this beautiful city is internationally known for its gingerbread. In 1643, the city officially recognized the Lebkuchen-Baker profession by creating the “League of Lebkuchen-Bakers.” In 1645, the league created strict guidelines that commercial bakers had to follow in order to sell their lebkuchen. And the quality of the lebkuchen gingerbread was so high that it was even used as currency. Below is my grandmother’s recipe. Ingredients: dough: 1 egg 2/3 cup and…

El Clasico

El Clasico

Once again Barcelona has reigned over their major adversary Real Madrid. The final score of 4-0 points to the fact that the Madrid defense needs needs to go back to the drawing board and Coach Rafael Benitez needs to help them do exactly that. Sad to see Messi play so few minutes, but injuries are injuries in this game. Gratefully his team still won!

Mariacron! Germany’s Finest Brandy

Mariacron! Germany’s Finest Brandy

When one discusses German cuisine, brandy usually does not enter into the conversation. Beer and wine—absolutely. But brandy? Yet for over one hundred years Germany has produced one of the best brandies on the planet—Mariacron. One usually drinks it as an after dinner liqueur, or with certain fruits and cheeses as an aperitif. I think I prefer it just about any time!

Benteke’s Bicycle Kick!

Benteke’s Bicycle Kick!

Every once in a while in the game of soccer a player succeeds in completing one of the most difficult of all technical feats—the bicycle kick. This last weekend was no exception. Even though Manchester United ultimately won the game 3-1, the thrill of the entire game came when Liverpool player Christian Benteke performed one of the best bicycle kicks I have ever witnessed. This odd balletic movement never ceases to quicken my heart and cause me to cheer as…
